My Story

While being homeless me and my older brother, scavenged for whatever we could find to eat and wear daily. I worked in a grocery store for a while trying to take care of myself and my sibling’s, and to pay for my 8th grade graduation that my parents decided not to show up for. While being in the streets, I would inquire to different ones like elders, carpenters, and mechanics to see if they were in need of assistance so that I could make money to keep from stealing or begging.

I was homeless for years, but with the help of certain people in the neighborhood I was blessed to stay away from certain things like guns, drugs, alcohol, and gangs. My brother that I stayed in the street with was killed while we were homeless while I was at work. I then came to realization that I was by myself; at least that’s the way I felt. Continuing to work I was able to get on my feet finding a place to live and being able to buy food and clothes. Even when I wasn’t in a position to help other’s I have always had heart to help my younger siblings as well as other children. I worked with a few children hands-on and out of those I helped 90% of them are doing well for themselves. Mentoring children ended up being just as much therapy for me as it was for the kids.

In 2008 I decided since I had such a story that needed to be told not just in the school where I had already been speaking but everywhere, I started a mentoring program by the name of Men of Valor Mentoring Inc. In doing such I was able to form alliances with different companies such as, Gateway Foundation, Chicago Public Schools, as well as different religious groups. Funding this program single-handed I have been able to help with graduations, send ones to College, school supplies, sport gear and it doesn’t stop at monetary gifts. The emotional and physical support to these children has been said to be a very needed and helpful thing. I have appeared for report cards, sports games, court, home visits, and all sorts of events. I am exited to know that I was able to be in these children lives and to be able to make a difference. This is why Men of Valor Mentoring inc needs all the support that is offered to continue assisting ones who are in need of support to what ever degree that they may have a chance to grow.
